Energy consumption

In 2019 it was estimated that across Somerset c1,225ktoe was consumed. The largest broad sectors in terms of energy consumption was transport (c39% of total energy consumption), with domestic consumption and industrial and commercial usage both responsible for c30% of energy consumption each. The high proportional share of transport and domestic use illustrates the challenges of further reducing emissions associated with energy consumptions, given Somerset is a largely rural area and car transport is a necessity for many and that poor energy efficiency in the housing stock will need to improve significantly to reduce household energy use. This situation now being exacerbated by high and rising energy costs.
