Child Poverty

Over the past 5 years there have been some falls in the extent of child poverty – although not significant. In some areas of Somerset such as Sedgemoor c17% of all children live in relative poverty (defined as below 60% of average household income in a given year) – representing c13,700 children.

There has been a larger fall in the number of children living in absolute poverty (again assessed as a threshold but adjusted for inflation – therefore reflecting the change in cost of living). In 2016 there were c13,800 children in absolute poverty, and this fell to c10,500 in 2021. Again, the dynamics of Covid on child poverty will not be fully reflected in the latest data.
